What is Sudoku?

Sudoku is a number puzzle that originated in Japan. You fill a 9x9 grid with numbers from 1 to 9, following a few simple rules. People play it to unwind, stay sharp, or just because the puzzles are satisfying to solve.

How to Play Sudoku

Fill every empty cell with a number from 1 to 9. The catch: each number can only appear once per row, once per column, and once per 3x3 box.

Basic Sudoku Rules

  • Each row needs all numbers from 1 to 9, no repeats.
  • Each column needs all numbers from 1 to 9, no repeats.
  • Each 3x3 box needs all numbers from 1 to 9, no repeats.

How the Game Works

Difficulty levels

Easy mode starts you off with more numbers filled in, good for learning. Medium adds a bit more challenge. Hard gives you fewer clues, so you have to work for it.

Scoring

You earn points for each correct number. Harder levels and faster times give you more points. Try to beat your own record.

Chances

Those hearts are your chances. Each wrong answer costs you one. Lose them all and the game ends. On Easy and Medium, you can use a Second Chance to keep going.

Timer

The clock tracks how long you take. As you practice, your times will drop. Faster completion means a higher score.

Tips to Solve Sudoku

Look at rows and columns

Check each row and column for missing numbers. This shows you the easier cells to fill first.

Start with the obvious ones

Look for cells where only one number fits. Solve those first to build momentum.

Keep track in your head

Think through which numbers could go in each cell. It helps you eliminate wrong choices.

Find the only option

Sometimes a number can only go in one spot within a row, column, or box. Watch for those.

Think, do not guess

Sudoku runs on logic. If you feel like guessing, step back and look again. The answer is there.

Take a break

Stuck? Walk away for a bit. When you come back, you will often spot what you missed.

Why Play Sudoku?

Sudoku exercises your memory and concentration. It is also a decent way to unwind when you want something low-key but engaging. Each puzzle solved is a small win.
