Center and Corners

Where you start matters more than you think

Most casual players pick random squares. But the center and corners are significantly better starting positions. Here is why.

Why the center?

The center square touches 4 winning lines: horizontal, vertical, and both diagonals. Corners touch 3. Edge squares only touch 2. Simple math says center first.

The center connects to all 4 winning lines

When the center is taken

If your opponent grabs the center, take a corner. Corners give you 3 winning lines to work with. Edges only give you 2.

  1. Going first? Take the center.
  2. Center taken? Grab a corner.
  3. Try to get opposite corners when possible.

Corners create diagonal and edge winning opportunities

Quick notes

  • Center gives you the highest win rate when going first. This is mathematically proven.
  • Edge squares (the middle of each side) are the weakest spots on the board.
  • If you control two opposite corners, you often force a win or draw.
